Rockies Ask....Theo Stands Firm On "Super Six."
The Helton negotiations have hit a snag, a snag in the form of a brick wall erected by Theo Epstein to protect the Sox' five (or six...see below) top prospects. They would be Craig Hansen, Little Manny Delcarmen, Jacob Elsbury, Daniel Bard and Clay Buchholz. The Rockies, in addition to Mikey Lowell and Julian Tavarez, want one of these guys. Our beloved Jon Lester's name has even been mentioned. Theo said, in a word, NO to each and every one of the "Super Six." And that's good. Helton is 32, he's not 28.
If this is as far as the deal goes, we're fine. I liked the setup of the 2007 Sox before these talks with the Rockies were made public, with the exception of the missing closer. To include one of these five (six, including JL) future greats would be lunacy.
Enjoy your Monday...I'll be back later this morning as we start the new week.

they cannot give up Lowell. i don't even understand why they are talking about a deal for a first baseman anyway!! we need a CLOSER. we have good fielders in the corners. we don't need to give up Lowell & move Youk & get a new guy at 1B. we need to get a CLOSER. why are they being so categorically stupid about this??
i think my biggest argument about moving Youk is that he already played 3B prior to the Sox acquiring Lowell. he didn't exactly shine defensively over there. he found his niche at 1B. why mess with success when we already have an unimpressive kid at 2B & Lugo at SS who is a downgrade defensively from A-Gon. we don't need any more changes to the infield. we need reliability *someplace* on the field. think of all the balls fielded by Lowell that would have been left to Manny with a lesser glove at third! considering who we will have playing RF & LF, i want our dependable gloves on first & third.
**dawn**, first of all, thank you for your helping words the day I changed to the "new" blog...and as you said, all is fine. Now, I'm also a HUGE Mikey fan....you know that. And unless every piece of this newest puzzle fits, I'm with you. I love our line-up. Top to bottom....well, NO bottom. Why? No closer. We're a little better than a .500 club without someone stepping up in that crucial role.
This makes me so mad. Why? Choosing a closer WHILE in Spring Training, scant weeks before the games mean something!!! Not smart.
Thank you yet again......and I have faith that Theo will NOT give up any of those "super six" that I referenced in my post.
Hey, I love it that you read me! And take care....P.
And your comments? They're so great. Don't be a stranger.......please...
i know that the Sox are trying to beef up the bats here, but Helton's numbers have declined at the plate over the last four years & he has known back problems. plus, while hitting is great, you can lose games with bad defense. i really think they need to stop tinkering with the guys we have now & start doing something with the closer situation. OMG, this just makes me want to beat my head against the wall. how on earth are they so blatantly ignoring this issue?!
I'm doing so much more than ignoring the six letter word. And that word? C L O S E R!!!!!!!
Thanks D.
Good post, dawn ... I heard Clement's name mentioned now. And Peter, you're so right - it's gonna be hard to develop a closer by committee. And we're reducing the size of the committee.
And all of us lost such a wonderful horse, just now...and I cried.....take are all!
I'm sad without tears...you know what I mean...and thanks for the great comments.....and ***dawn****, thank you especially, for guiding me when I was lost. So to speak! Have a great night...cold, but great!!!!!! EVERYONE!!!!!!!!
they better not give up my hansen or lester!!!!!!
