Wily Mo Pena Makes Me MAD!!!!!

Peter here. The clouds cleared early this morning after dire-sounding reports of a quick moving storm called an "Alberta Clipper." So named because this type of storm moves quickly from the Great Lakes southeast to somewhere in southern New England on its rapid journey into the Atlantic Ocean. Some of these re-develop off shore. This one didn't, nor was it expected too. And a dusting would be a generous term for the white stuff we were left with. And that's just fine.

Oh, and this story BOTHERS me. I am putting that mildly.....please, read on, from the Herald...about WMP.....

"The Sox still aren’t close to reaching a deal with Wily Mo Pena on a new contract, which could lead to the first arbitration case to go to a hearing since Theo Epstein took over as general manager after the 2002 season. The outfielder, who was paid $1.25 million last year, is seeking a raise to $2.2 million. The club is offering $1.725."

OK, Peter here.....I was going to include this WMP story with one or two others, but this BOTHERS me so much, I think it deserves to stand alone.....and yes, it does!!!

And so....my words....to Wily Mo Pena....fourth outfielder for the team we love, and hopeful reader of my blog. Or else, he'd miss this message. And readers? I hope you know I'm kidding...but if we were standing together, WMP and me, I'd turn to my left, and utter these words to him. And that I promise! OK...here we go. I hope I'm not knocked down or something.

And this, my readers, is Peter fiction.

"Hi there Wily. I hope you can prove to all of us RSN fans that you can CATCH THE BALL without any Jose Canseco antics before you huff and puff and demand more money than you're worth. I think this team, our team, the Boston Red Sox, would be so much better with Trot Nixon as our 4th outfielder.....but you're the one we will have to live with. So bash the ball, and when you get to the outfield, whichever one that will be, DO NOT EMBARRASS US! And behave. PLEASE!!!! I have no faith in you, so MAKE US BELIEVE! We are a nation of faith. Your RSN "faith level?" Hovering near nonexistant, at least for me....

Wily Mo, thanks for reading! Your comments are always welcome. Peter N...This might be the start of a wonderful relationship!"

.....OR NOT! Up to you, guy who needs a bigger glove.

And the link to the original three part article from the Herald is here, with Daisuke news, too....click on the title of this post.

WMP?? He has to prove himself before he asks the club, IN FRONT OF ALL OF US, for more money.
Peter, your guy here. Thanks for reading. ALWAYS.

exactly what did he do to *earn* more money in the first place?? i think the Sox offering him a raise is more than enough. he didn't live up to his hitting expectations. spent some time on the DL. and we won't even talk about whatever that was that went on when he played RF. for all of that. we could have Trot back & have a player who actually goes out there & *plays*. i am ready to tell him to hit the road.

**dawn**....EXACTLY!!! And what was that in rightfield? And NOT just at Fenway...anywhere with a roof!!!!

"he didn't live up to his hitting expectations."

I think he more than exceeded expectations- he grew more patient, and took the ball to the opposite field quite nicely. Save the injury, he had a nice year of growth. No offense guys, but he posted career highs in a lot of categories, and a raise is SOP in arbitration case. This is really a pretty small matter- arbitration hearings are rather run of the mill.

In arb years, a player gets a raise 99.9% of the time. Sometimes they can't agree on how much, so they hash it out in front of a mediator. Nothing to get "mad" about.

Peter, I don't understand- he has some weaknesses, but why the hate on Wily? He's a Red Sox, after all :) (plus, he's not THAT bad in the outfield, and boy can that boy HIT!)

Is that Alberta Clipper a Canadian Low (not to be confused with a Mexican High)? We have a Gulf Great White rolling across the prairie here; leaving a couple of inches of the fluffy stuff ... maybe heading your way!?!

And I play the outfield much better than that fool with a glove....I hope you saw some games last year. But I always thank you for reading, even if this one time you might be mistaken...P

And I'm not mad! OK???? Just sad...because you seem to know much about baseball.

Well, Theo's made a practice to avoid them, but it doesn't make them in any way necessarily contentious. There's a TON of history on this. Sides exchange figures, agree and sign or can't agree and take it to a third party. In fact, just as an fyi, our own great Bill James used to consult for teams during arbitration hearings.

Either way- he wants a bigger raise. He's entitled to feel that way. It's a business, right? :)

Oh, I didn't think you were mad :) Just expressing my very humble opinion.

I saw every Sox game last year. I'd say Pena's a little below average, but better than, for instance Manny. Wily is at least fast and can cover his mistakes with speed.

And I know he wears the correct color socks.....I'll give him a chance...while he's lost in right field. I have to hope that JD stays healthy, and Manny doesn't decide yet again to QUIT on us. He did, you know...I'lll save all this for the season....again, thanks Seven..I know you meant well. But....P

Manny didn't quit, Peter, with all due respect (and it's a lot of respect), I think that's very unfair. He was clearly hurt- checked by doctors, etc.

How come you're so down on our players today, friend? :)

So we still like each other, I hope. But sometimes, my words turn into the truth months later. This time, I hope not! Lunchtime! You'll do great in law! Peter

Please?!!!!!!!!!! I can not even reply to that...and I'm hungry, I have to take my blood glucose level, but Manny NOT??????......Welcome to reality Sox '06.....thanks again..I mean it...but.......wow, I'm surprised...take care

Like each other? Why wouldn't I? You seem like a terrific guy. Just disagree on a little baseball, but if we agreed on everything, what fun would it be? :) :)

I HOPE i'll be good in law. So much work! That's why I enjoy your blog- good timewaster for me!

I have to answer....players of his, players of other teams, and even me.....when the truth is there right in our eyes? And I can never be down on my Sox...just players who do not live up to being worthy of the uniform. And if we took a poll of EVERY major leaguer, AL players, NL players...well....MANNY QUIT. And I hate to say it, and I hate to not agree with one of my favorite readers, but I DO have to tell the truth as I see it. I hope that's OK........I'll sign this Peter......thanks seven.

No problem- I love commenting.

That being said, Peter, Manny did not "quit." He was diagnosed with knee patellar tendinitis, which requires rest to heal. His manager said this was true, his GM said this was true, and he was not punished for not playing (as would be the case if he was simply refusing to play).

I've not seen a single player come out and say he quit- I've seen some dubiously sourced reports that some players were "guessing" he was, but then it's their words against his, and he's the one with the injury.

Really, there's no proof, and he was clearly hobbling around on a number of different occasions. It seems pretty logical to me.

Anyway, feel better (my Mom has disabetes as well- no fun), talk to you soon!
