Tom Werner's View Of The Red Sox And Available 2011 Free Agents

Adrian Beltre, Carl Crawford, Jayson Werth, Justin Upton and Victor Martinez are the five free agents that the Boston Red Sox are focusing on to bolster their anemic offense. The Arizona Diamondbacks will demand at least four players, two on the major league roster (Bard & Ellsbury have been mentioned) to part with their young superstar, Justin Upton. And don't forget the two or three arms needed in the bullpen. Sometimes it seems all too overwhelming but this year will not be dedicated to "building a bridge" to the future. Too many current players will be gone after next year. One of the team owners, Tom Werner, was optimistic after the meetings were over that Boston will accomplish what they set out to do. And that is to acquire the missing pieces so play will continue through October next year and for many years to come. Here's Tom...

“I think that we are going to sign, I won’t promise, we are going to sign a significant free agent. We are going to make a trade to improve ourselves. I want to assure everyone that there is no bridge year here this year. In 2011, we’re committed to win."

"A" significant free agent? More than one would be nice but as long as third base is covered, either by Youkilis and a brand new first baseman (AGonz?) or by Adrian Beltre or someone equivalent, leaving Youk to play first, all will be well. I don't know what Theo has up his sleeve but it better be something major, hopefully not a dead rabbit. I think he'll surprise us all.

That's a quickie post for this Friday, November 19th. I hope every one of you has a great day and a terrific weekend. Each day brings more winter chill with fewer warmer respites but 'tis the season, I guess.
